FAQs

  • Ayurvedic Yoga Massage (AYM) was developed by Master Kusum Modak in Pune, India, after many years of studying traditional Ayurvedic massage and Iyengar yoga.

The style of each session is adjusted to serve client needs, so sessions can be more or less dynamic, deep, energetic, slow, nurturing and soothing. In the tradition of Ayurveda, we recognise that it is not only the quality of the soft tissues that we need to work with - our minds and our feelings affect our physical bodies. The aim of AYM is to help the client feel more centred and for energy to flow more freely through the body, working in a way that allows the client to feel relaxed, safe and able to breathe deeply.

  • We work to relax the tissues around the rib cage, abdomen and pelvis, activate breathing muscles and promote awareness of the breath in a nurturing space. Then focus on physically softening any tension in the muscles, ligaments, tendons and fascia, and on promoting healthy joint mobility through oil massage, passive stretches, tractions and mobilisations as appropriate. This can encourage the nervous system to relax, reduce stress levels, and promote the healthy function of all the body’s systems.

  • Yes! Treatments can be focused on an area where there is an injury or pain but we tend to work with the body as a whole as everything is interconnected through the nervous system, fascia, circulation and our movement patterns.

  • Normally ayurvedic massage is performed on a futon on the floor. This means that your therapist can use their body weight to offer pressure with their hands/palms, thumbs, knuckles, elbows, fists, feet or knees and always work in the best direction, with the best pressure, and using the optimal surface area so that we can manipulate tissues as necessary.

  • We use natural oils and a powder from the ground root of Acorus calamus, a wetland plant in the sweetflag family. This gives a pleasant exfoliating feeling, but mainly helps improve circulation and warm up the tissues, intensifying the benefits of the massage.

  • Yes Sam is trained and qualified to provide prenatal massage. Please let us know that you are pregnant when you are booking so that we can prepare.

  • Body cupping is not painful but it may feel tender if you are tight in the areas we are working with. You may also get marks from the cups after your session but these will disappear after a few days.

  • No we do not use needles in our cupping therapies, we allow the cups to do the suction work.
